In our opinion, it would be impossible to talk about the 50’s without mentioning the Marilyn look. From sleek makeup to carefully curled hair, this look deserves some serious admiration. We know many of us out there loved and still love this style, which is why we’re here to give you some tips on how to get it
Eyeshadow, Eyeliner and Eyelashes
We know it’s tempting to reach for the large eyeshadow pallet of varied tones and shades, but the Marilyn look is about keeping it sleek and simple. To get this look, apply a light dusting of white or light blue eyeshadow all over the lid, then finish off with a neat eyeliner flick. Now it’s time to apply the lashes. The following might bring a tear to every fake eyelash lover’s eye, (including ours) but it’s key to getting the Marilyn look. Take a pair of lashes and cut them in half, take the longer end of the lashes and apply this to the end of the eyelid. By applying half of the lash to the end of the eyelid, this helps the lashes to look more natural and gives you the ultimate Marilyn look.
It’s time to plump up and perfect that famous Marilyn lip. We recommend using a deep, rouge red lip liner and a softer, coral red lipstick to get this look. Firstly, use the lip liner to accentuate the lips, defining the shape, and creating a cupid’s bow if needed. Next, use the lighter, coral red lipstick to shade in the rest of the lip. This lighter shade of lipstick against the darker lip liner will create the illusion that your lips are fuller – yes you can thank us later.
We know that flawless skin was de rigueur in the 50’s and trust us, this wasn’t easy. Lucky for us, we now have the perfect beauty tools to keep our complexion looking amazing – meaning we have no excuse. We recommend using the Remington REVEAL Compact Facial Cleansing Brush, not only does it cleanse and exfoliate your skin but it leaves you looking refreshed and rejuvenated.
High arched pointed brows
Let’s talk about the brows. When creating the Marilyn look you need to really focus on the shape you’re creating. The Marilyn brows were very angular and had a high and pointed arch. So, the best way to tackle this shape is to use a brow stencil and carefully pluck away the hairs surrounding it. For precision plucking we recommend using the Remington REVEAL™ Beauty Trimmer & Tweezer Kit.
It’s a well-known assumption, blondes have more fun. So if blonde isn’t your natural colour and you’re looking to get the Marilyn look, we recommend taking a trip to the hairdressers. Trust us on this one; this isn’t the time to experiment with box dyes. Your hair could end up looking brassy instead of blonde bombshell.
Short to shoulder length hair is best for creating the Marilyn look. It allows the curls to hold and remain short, framing the face.
Now it’s time to perfect those curls. We suggest you start by blow drying your hair with a rounded brush to give it some extra volume at the root. Next, section the hair into three sections, one down each side of the head and one down the middle. Put in your heated rollers, spray with a spritz of hairspray and leave the rollers to cool. After taking out the rollers, run your fingers through your hair to separate the curls and spray them once again for a maximum hold. And you’re ready to go work that Marilyn Look.
